From teenagers to women in their 30s, all desire to look like a beach Barbie all year round. But, exposing skin to the harmful rays of sun for that golden glow is just too risky. This is why sunless tanning methods have gained immense popularity. Off all the methods, tanning beds are craze among women and high school girls. They practically live at the tanning bed. However, they have no idea that how damaging these beds can be.
Tanning beds emits ultraviolet radiation to produce a cosmetic tan. The rays emitted from the device are typically 97% UVA and 3% UVB. The World Health Organization does not recommend the use of UV tanning devices for cosmetic reasons as it has found to cause skin cancer. Even if you are fortunate enough to not get cancer there are still several skin problems associated with the exposure to UV rays. Here are few of them:
- Acne:It is a myth that tanning bed clears off breakouts. The rays from tanning bed actually kill the ability of skin to build new collagen and repair, making acne problem even worse. So, if you want to cure your acne, stay out of the tanning bed.
- Ageing: If you thought that sunless tanning can help you reduce risk of premature ageing, you were right. But, considering tanning beds for sunless tanning was a wrong choice. Direct exposure to UV rays from the bed can cause wrinkles, uneven skin tone and age spots. If you don’t want a wrinkled faux tan, then avoid these tanning beds.
- Eye damage: The tanning bed can severely damage your eyes even if you wear those goggles that the tanning salons provide. Those goggles can’t protect you 100% from cancer risks or damage to your retina.
- Skin infection: If you have a sensitive skin, then even your first visit to the tanning bed can become a terrible experience. UV rays from the beds can irritate the skin cells causing allergic reactions such as itching, spotting or peeling. In fact, there are huge chances of bacterial and fungal infections like ringworm if the bed is not cleaned properly before you use it.
Apart from these there are many other risks associated with the use of tanning beds, hence you must avoid them. If you are among those women, who love tan, then consider sunless tanning options like natural self-tanning lotions or capsules. These not only give you a sun-kissed glow that looks completely natural but are safe and cause no severe side-effects.
