5 tanning tips for the perfect self-tan application

Flaunting a tanned look at parties and vacation is a trend now. If you detest the idea of spending hours under the sun, then using self-tanning lotions is the best way of getting the bronzed look. Here are simple tanning tips on how to apply self-tanner perfectly.

There is no denying that tan is the best accessory you can wear, whether at a wedding or a night out with friends. Tanning is becoming a fashion statement, with most Hollywood celebrities wearing a sun-kissed look to red carpet. More and more men and women now love to get the bronzed look and hence, they are turning to sunless tanning solutions that give you a tanned look without sun exposure. Self-tanning products are a boon for those who don’t wish to expose their skin to UV rays of sun.

Applying self-tan flawlessly is all about preparation. If you know the right tips and tricks, you can fake it perfectly. Here are tanning tips that you must know before you apply a body self-tanning lotion:

  1. Choose right products
  2. You will be spoilt for choice when it comes to sunless tanning lotions. There are many products on the market. Before you buy any lotion, it is essential that you check all the ingredients carefully to ensure that it doesn’t contain chemicals that you are allergic to. If you have a sensitive skin, consider using natural products to avoid side-effects. To be sure, do a patch test 24 to 48 hours in advance.

  3. Prepare your skin well
  4. Before applying the lotion, get rid of all the body hair. No matter which hair removal method you use, it must be done at least 24 hours before you plan to apply the tanning lotion. Most of the self-tanners are not recommended to be used on red and irritated skin. To prevent uneven colouration, exfoliate before tanning. Exfoliation is essential to remove dead skin cells and make skin surface smooth for proper application of the lotion.

  5. Hydrate your skin
  6. After exfoliation, use a moisturiser to make sure that your skin is ready to absorb the tanning product. Avoid using oil-based moisturiser as it will clog pores, preventing tanner to penetrate the skin. Water-based moisturisers work best before tanning. Apply moisturiser evenly on your body, but focus on dry areas like heels, knees and elbows.

  7. Time your tan
  8. Self-tanners take some time to get darker. So, if you have an event coming, tan at least 2 to 3 days before. Within this time, your tan will develop completely and it will get dark enough for you to flaunt it. Make sure you apply tanning lotion only when you have a lot of time on hand as it takes time to dry. Don’t take shower at least 6 to 8 hours after applying the product. Remember, longer you will allow tan to develop, darker it will become.

  9. Re-apply tanner to maintain the glow
  10. After the tan dries out, you can either apply a tan extender to make the look last longer. If you see the colour coming off, don’t shy away from re-applying the lotion. Don’t exfoliate your skin for at least 3 days after you have tanned, otherwise the colour will fade unevenly.

For a long-lasting golden glow use the above mentioned tanning tips every time you apply self-tanners. Depending on your skin's cell turnover, a tan should last anywhere from five to nine days. To prolong it, stay out of water for extended periods and don’t rub skin when drying off.
